Symbols

In the story a conch shell is made as a symbol. The conch shell represents civilization amongst the boys on the island. The use of the Conch shell to the boys is who so ever holds the conch shell in an assembly in his hands may speak. No one may interrupt anyone who is speaking except for Ralph because he is the chief. Sometimes this does not work because the others wouldn't let Piggy speak in an assembly.


The beastie is another symbol in this story. The beastie represents fear among some of the boys. Ralph does not believe in "the beastie" because he thinks that it is the littluns figment of their imagination. Simon believes that it may be "them" because he believes everyone can be mean or evil. Jack is determined to kill the beastie when he comes across it.

 
The fire is one other symbol in this story. The fire symbolizes hope. The fire was started with one lens of Piggy's specs which caused hope. Which means that they are hopeful that they will be rescued when Piggy, Simon, and Ralph see a ship in the distance. But that was once shattered when Jack told Sam and Eric to come hunting while they were tending the fire.

After Ralph looks up at the Naval officer he soon comes to realize with joy that he wouldn’t have died. As Ralph and the other Naval officers heard screaming and feet running towards the beach The officer drew his pistol and Ralph hid behind him. In shock Jack and his hunters dropped their weapons. Everyone who was left on the island was extremely happy to know that they would all be rescued. In the whisk of excitement the boys forgot about hunting one another and went to go to tell all the others.   In fear Ralph stayed on the beach and the Naval Officer asked "why won't you go share the good news with your friends". Ralph then responded "No sir, those are not my friends", Ralph can feel the Officer glare at him for a time but then cut off by the sounds of excitement. Chapter 8

Dear Diary, All the boys were happy about killing the pig. Yet, my leadership was questioned by no one other than Jack himself. I had no idea why he would question it. I soon came to realize that all he wanted was to become chief instead of me. Jack told all of the boys that I am a coward which was a lie. Jack then wanted to vote on who will be chief  and told all of the other boys to vote. To my surprise no one did vote for me to step down as chief. Jack wanted to become leader so much that he left all of the others including myself. He even wanted all of the other hunters to join his tribe. He is now bribing others with meat so they may join his tribe. Which would probably leave me with nothing and no one. Just when I was in doubt Piggy then comes to comfort me. Chapter 9

Dear Diary,               Today is a very difficult day and I feel as if there are worse days coming. What happened today was that I  believed bathing was one thing to do today. Playfully I was squirting water at Piggy and by mistake at his specs. But than Piggy noticed the not so pleasant whether which was very cloudy and looked as if it was going to rain. Soon we started to wonder where everyone had gone off to but we soon came to realize that they have went to Jack's party. I was upset that they had left just for some stupid meat. Of course I was uneasy because they all believe they are a tribe because they put war paint on. Piggy and I went over to the party Jack was holding, Piggy and I went to see how the events were and to just check up on things. At the event it seems as if everyone is having a blast.
